My Beautiful Boy
If someone were to ask me three years ago if I know Dave Marks, I probably would’ve said something like, “Yeah of course, he’s pretty much famous at my camp.” If someone were to ask me that same question today, I would say, “I sure do. He’s my amazing boyfriend and I love him with all of my heart.”
And I do. For so many reasons.
I couldn’t ask for a better boyfriend who…
- looks so good in hipster glasses
- appreciates music as much as I do
- has better hair than me
- is so personable
- isn’t afraid to be himself
- is as spontaneous and outgoing as me
- loves to sing and dance, even in public
- has warm, soft hands that I always want to hold
- cares so much about his family and friends
- knows how much value the little things have
Two years ago during the summer of 2010 we were on the same staff at Camp Howe. I already knew that he was a pretty cool guy and that we would become great friends while working together. What I didn’t know was that he would spend the whole summer trying to express his feelings for me and to get me to feel the same way. After a few weeks of attempting to push my thoughts and feelings to the back of my mind, I gave in and let everyone else know that they had been right all along.
We both knew that at the end of the summer we would have to part ways with him going back to school in Vermont and me starting my college career in Pennsylvania. But despite the geographical distance between us we decided to at least try to defy the long distance. We saw each other when we were home and made the long trips north and south until we were finally back together at camp, separated only by rules. Our feelings and love has proven strong enough so that now almost two years later we are still together. We both have different lives in different places, but that just means that when we are together it’s that much sweeter.
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I think that there’s a lot more to it. Absence also makes the heart feel lonely and unsatisfied and want more of what it can’t have.
I love you,
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.
I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out;
I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can’t help
Dimly seeing there,
And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else had looked
Quite far enough to find.
I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple;
Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.
I love you
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good
And more than any fate
Could have done
To make me happy.
You have done it
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.
You have done it
By being yourself.
Perhaps that is what
Being a friend means,
After all.
“If I know what love is, it is because of you.” ♥
